Common Illnesses

Malaria (冷热病?) - An infectious disease characterized by cycles of chills, fever, and sweating, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Measles (麻疹) - An acute, contagious viral disease, usually occurring in childhood and characterized by eruption of red spots on the skin and fever.

Strep Throat (I think it is 链球菌性喉炎) - An infection of the throat, often epidemic, characterized by fever and inflammation of the tonsils.

Meningitis (脑膜炎) - Inflammation of the meninges of the brain and the spinal cord, most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection and characterized by fever, vomiting, intense headache, and stiff neck.

Herpes (疱疹) - Any of several viral diseases causing the eruption of small blisterlike vesicles on the skin or mucous membranes, can be sexually transmitted.

The Mumps (腮腺炎) - An acute, inflammatory, contagious disease caused by a paramyxovirus and characterized by swelling of the salivary glands, especially the parotids, and sometimes of the pancreas, ovaries, or testes. This disease, mainly affecting children, can be prevented by vaccination.



The Devil

The Devil is the title given to the supernatural being, who, in mainstream Christianity, Islam, and some other religions, is believed to be a powerful, evil entity and the tempter of humankind. Or: the rebellious angel who in Christian belief is the adversary of God and lord of evil.

The Devil has many different names:

  • Satan
  • Lucifer
  • Beelzebub
  • The Prince of Darkness
  • The Evil One


Athletic Equipment

Shoulder Pads - a piece of protective equipment used in American and Canadian football. Most modern shoulder pads consist of a shock absorbing foam material with a hard plastic outer covering.


Jockstrap - (also known as a jock, supporter, or athletic supporter) is an undergarment designed for supporting the male genitalia during the performance of sports or other vigorous physical activity. Note: The word jock is also slang for penis.


Mouthguard (or mouth guard) - Protective wear that fits into the mouth and covers the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce levels of harm (injury) to the teeth, particularly when playing sports.


Cleats - A type of shoe designed especially for sports played on grass or dirt, such as soccer or American football. Unlike “spikes” for sports such as track and field and baseball, cleats generally have large studs on the bottom to assist in gripping the surface, preventing sliding and assisting in rapid changes of direction. The stud itself is often called a cleat.

penknife A small pocketknife usually with only one blade. Pictures here. Here, I got a penknife, though.
Rub it in to keep reminding someone of his failures; to nag someone about something. You needn’t rub it in.
panhandling or to panhandle To approach strangers and beg for money or food. Hey, you don’t think I’m going around panhandling for you, do you?
a long face A discontented or sad facial expression. But it’s no good, though, if you haven’t got a long face to go with it.
smart aleck or smart ass A person regarded as obnoxiously self-assertive. You’re such a smart aleck. Nobody knows anything but you.

Desserts

Strawberry Shortcake - Sliced strawberries are mixed with sugar and allowed to sit an hour or so, until the strawberries have surrendered a great deal of their juices. The shortcakes are split and the bottoms are covered with a layer of strawberries, juice, and whipped cream, typically flavored with sugar and vanilla. The top is replaced, and more strawberries and whipped cream are added onto the top. Some convenience versions of shortcake are not made with a “shortcake” (i.e. biscuit) at all, but a base of sponge cake or sometimes a corn muffin.


Banana Split - ice cream served on a banana sliced in half lengthwise and usually garnished with flavored syrups, fruits, nuts, and whipped cream.


Chocolate Malt - a beverage made by dissolving malted milk in milk and usually adding ice cream and flavoring. Malt = 麦芽. A chocolate malt is similar to a chocolate shake (or milkshake), but a malt is thicker.


Cobbler - a deep-dish fruit dessert with a thick top crust, often topped with ice cream. The most common types of cobbler are apple and peach. Pictured above: apple cobbler topped with caramel and ice cream. More pictures here.

 



Antibiotics

These are the most common antibiotics.

Amoxicillin (阿莫西林?)

Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; bronchitis; gonorrhea; and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers. Amoxicillin is in a class of medications called penicillin-like antibiotics.

 

Penicillin (盘尼西林)

The most famous of all antibiotics.

 

Erythromycin (红霉素)

Erythromycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as bronchitis; diphtheria; Legionnaires’ disease; pertussis (whooping cough); pneumonia; rheumatic fever; venereal disease (VD); and ear, intestine, lung, urinary tract, and skin infections. It is also used before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection.

 

Doxycycline (多西环素?)

Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections; Lyme disease; acne; infections of skin, genital, and urinary systems; and anthrax (after inhalational exposure). It is also used to prevent malaria. Doxycycline is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria.



More Colors

You know what red, green, blue, and yellow look like, but how about these? These are some of the most common colors after the basic ones.

Beige - a variable color averaging light grayish-yellowish brown.
Emerald - a clear bright green.
Hot Pink - a vivid, almost neon pink.
Maroon - a dark purplish red.
Mauve - a moderate purple, violet, or lilac color.
Scarlet - a bright red. (Maybe you didn’t realize that Scarlett O’hara was named after a color — a color that matches her personality and character.)

Jungle Gym - a structure of vertical and horizontal bars for use by children at play.


Monkey Bars - a three-dimensional framework of horizontal and vertical bars from which children can hang and swing.


Seesaw - A long plank balanced on a central fulcrum so that with a person riding on each end, one end goes up as the other goes down.


Sandbox - a box that contains sand for children to play in.

Pinball - A game played on a device in which the player operates a plunger to shoot a ball down or along a slanted surface having obstacles and targets, often equipped with flippers to keep the ball in play.


Foosball - a table game resembling soccer in which the ball is moved by manipulating rods to which small figures of players are attached. More pictures here.

Stethoscope (听诊器) - a medical instrument for detecting sounds produced in the body that are conveyed to the ears of the listener through rubber tubing connected with a piece placed upon the area to be examined.


Tongue depressor - a thin wooden blade rounded at both ends that is used to depress the tongue to allow for inspection of the mouth and throat.


Scalpel (解剖刀) - a small straight thin-bladed knife used especially in surgery.


Bed pan - a shallow vessel used by a bedridden person for urination or defecation.


Syringe (注射器) - a device used to inject fluids into or withdraw them from something (as the body or its cavities).
